Displays of twinkling holiday lights don’t have to come at a price; in fact, some of the best ones can be found while cruising through a local neighborhood. And while attractions like Zoo Lights or Moody Gardens can be fun, they often come with limited hours and crowds of people.
Neighborhood displays, however, are not only free, but can also be enjoyed from the comfort of your car while you sip on peppermint hot chocolate and listen to Christmas tunes.
Here are six neighborhoods to check out for a dazzling good time.
River Oaks in Houston
Known as one of Houston’s first planned communities, this affluent neighborhood brings out all the stops when it comes to holiday lights. The area contains some of the biggest and most historic homes around, so be prepared to spend a good chunk of time to see it all.
Pecan Grove in Richmond
Over in the outskirts of Houston, the neighborhood of Pecan Grove has been putting on show-stopping light displays since the ’90s. If you’re interested in seeing everything the area has to offer, grab tickets to a Christmas hayride tour.
Prestonwood Forest in Northwest Houston
Dating back to 1977, the annual Nite of Lites hosted by Prestonwood Forest kicks off Dec. 13 and runs until Dec. 31. Based on photos from years prior, these residents go all out with wrapped trees, inflatable lawn decorations, and even a roof decorated with a glowing Texas flag.
Shepard Park Plaza in Houston
Don’t have time to look at Christmas lights before Dec. 25? Put the light displays in Shepard Park Plaza, which run until the first week of January, on your list. With almost the entire neighborhood participating, you’ll see everything from glowing reindeer to a Christmas movie being projected on a roof.
Candy Cane Lane in Missouri City
Nestled within the neighborhood of Quail Valley, Candy Cane Lane has gained a reputation for its holiday decorations. Forty years since its inception, the stretch of houses in Fort Bend County boast yard displays, themed decorations, and lots of candy canes.
The Heights in Houston
Ready to go all out when it comes to holiday lights? We saved the best for last with the annual Lights in the Heights. Started in 1987, the transformation of the Woodland Heights neighborhood has captivated Houstonians for over 35 years. The residents bring their A-game to compete in the House Decorating Competition, while visitors can enjoy light displays, parties, a kids zone, and even live music. While you can view the displays throughout the holiday season, the main event will be held Dec. 13.
